State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will soon launch Wi-Max, a wireless broadband service in the Rohtak Secondary Switching Area of Haryana. Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is a wireless broadband access technology that provides performance similar to 802.11/Wi-Fi networks with extended coverage and QOS (quality of service). WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access (BWA) up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and 3 – 10 miles (5 – 15 km) for mobile stations.
According to General manager SC Ahluwalia, Wi-max service would be available to subscribers in Rohtak city. It would later be extended to the entire SSA area comprising Rohtak, Bhiwani and Jhajjar revenue districts. Subscribers will be able to utilise wireless broadband services within an area of 15 km of every Wi-Max tower. So far, there are about 12000 broadband users in the Rohtak SSA.
