Uninon Telecom Minister A. Raja resigns over 2G spectrum scam

Succumbing to endless pressure and allegations, India’s Information Technology and Communications Minister, A Raja resigned on Sunday over his tainted involvement in the 2G spectrum allocation scam. According to the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), this Scam caused a loss of Rs. 1.76 lakh crore to the Indian exchequer back in 2007-08. Congress was already pressurising DMK to ask Raja to quit but the party refused to take any hasty decision But last night Raja submitted his resignation as telecom minister to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Speaking to the media on his resign, Raja said: “In order to avoid embarrassment to the Government and maintain peace and harmony in Parliament, I have resigned from his post. But I will prove my innocence.”
He further said, “I simply followed the prevalent policy while issueing licences to the new operators on first-come-first-served basis. My predecessors in the UPA and the NDA regime did the same a couple of months prior to my taking over as the minister, under the same policy and the same price.
What is 2G Spectrum Scam:
  • In 2008 2G licenses issued to private telecom players at throwaway prices ( Prices of year 2001 )
  • CAG Reported that Spectrum scam has cost the government Rs. 1.76 lakh crore
